The 7th graders have been learning about heat transfer in the atmosphere, and it was the perfect oppurtunity to bring out the hot plates! Students were introduced to laboratory heating plates and what they are used for. We used the hot plates to demonstrate radiation (the heat that the students felt from the hot plates without physically touching it), conduction (the metal spoon becomming warm from being in direct contact with boiling water), and convection (the water molecules heating up as the water boils). Students also got to use the magnetic stirrers on the heat plates!
